Embracing your Radiant Pregnancy (16th December 2012)

  

      

As an initiative to promote and support knowledge sharing on pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding, Pitter Patter organized a antenatal luncheon workshop with the theme “Embracing your Radiant Pregnancy” for parents-to-be on 16 December 2012 at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club  (KLGCC), co-sponsored by Cryocord, ABC campaign by Pfizer as well as Dumex Mamil Mama.

           

About 150 parents-to-be had a chance to have fun and meet new friends with other expecting couples under one roof.  They were seen busy checking out the booths displaying various products cater to their needs upon registration.

Expecting parents were then ushered to enjoy a sumptuous spread of dishes provided in the lunch buffet. They were enthralled by the food selections with a spread of popular appetizers, main dishes and desserts. 

Amidst the lunch, participants were entertained by a fashion runway by Dynas Nursing Attire.  A team of pregnant women-turned-models displaying her latest collection comprises of a range of colourful, glamourous, fashionable, high quality and affordable trendy nursing attires and maternity outfit. 

       

Spotlights were on them as the photographers were seen busy capturing the beautiful moments of the models.

Exclamations of surprise and awe were heard when the ladies elegantly showed off their bumps and perfect make up. They managed to woo the audience with their glamorous, fashionable, high quality and affordable maternity cum nursing attires.   

Immediately after the fashion show, the workshop kicked off by a Health talk by Ms Lee Ying Jie, Regional Nutritionist of Danone Dumex on “How to get the RIGHT nutrition during your pregnancy.”  She shared tips on the importance of nutrition and nutrient needs during pregnancy, ideal weight gain, meal plan suggestion and foods to avoid.  Her take home massage for the preggy includes practice balanced diet at all times, to have variety, Balance, Moderation, aim for appropriate weight gain and to maintain healthy lifestyle with adequate physical activity.

      

Next, Ms Surya Tay, experienced yoga therapist, pregnancy yoga instructor and children’s yoga teacher, who has been teaching yoga since 2003.  She did a demo on how to be blooming FIT and breathing techniques.  The simple gentle yoga postures during pregnancy can help to minimize discomforts such as water retention, backache and poor digestion, while breathing exercises regulate hormones and brings calmness to jangled emotions.   All these combined prepares a pregnant mother for smoother delivery and post natal recovery.

After the yogo session, Dr Helena Lim, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist of  KL Fertility & Gynaecology Centre, shared on Natural Birth vs Caesarean Birth – does patient has a choice?

She gave a detailed explanation on advantages and disadvantages of giving birth naturally and caesarean birth, what to expect during labour and delivery and various tools used in instrumental delivery.  Her take home massage was that expecting mothers have to be fully informed regarding the different ways of delivery, the benefits & risk associated.  It is best if a joined decision is made after taking consideration from factors shared between the expecting mother & her obstetrician.

 

Next, Dr Chua Kien Hui, stem cell expert & researcher, Associate Professor from Physiology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia shared “The Wonders of the Umbilical Cord.

He shared on the purpose and science of umbilical stem cell as well as the benefit of stem cell storage.  It was an eye opening experience for parents- to-be to learn about amazing experience of stem cell storage, therapy and research.

Before the participants adjourn for tea break, Ms Winnie Lai, Clarins Senior Trainer shared on Beautifully Pregnant with Clarins as well as a video on the history and testimony of satisfied Clarins client who went for prenatal massage to relieve uncomfortable aches common in pregnancy.  Besides, Ms Winnie also shared the beautiful secrets to enhance the beauty of pregnant women and for them to enjoy their pregnancy journey. 

Participants were ushered to a tea break as well as to explore the mamalicous market specially created for them to explore nutritious foods, juices and cooking demo prepared by our sponsors and partners. They also redeemed product samples and special voucher from the sponsor’s booths.

During the break, Cryocord shared the science of cord blood banking, reasons to store baby’s cord blood, the company background and their success stories via a video presentation.

After the afternoon tea break and shopping spree, Dr Khoo Boo Aik , Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist of  Sunway Medical Centre shared on Baby healthcare & Baby development. 

    

Dr Khoo enlightened the new parents on tips on ways to have healthy baby that leads to joyful/smart children as well as holistic, wise and caring adult, safe sleeping position and environment, ensure healthy gut and immune system, breast feeding, Balance nutrition and good personal hygiene, vaccination, allergy prevention as well as the importance of  Pre/Probiotics.

Dr Khoo also emphasized on the importance of vaccinations and immune system and further educated them on the impact of pneumococcal disease and rota virus.

The workshop continued with video clips sharing on “Protecting our children against diseases by ABC campaign” by Pfizer.  ABC 4 Pneumococcal Campaign was founded to create awareness of the dangers of Pneumococcal Disease and rally parents to fight this potentially fatal disease together.  Parents-to-be gained valuable insight on Pneumococcal diseases awareness and tips to fight against the said diseases. 

Lastly, Pn Jasmine Tay Abdullah, certified & trained breastfeeding counsellor, shared on the key to successful breastfeeding which covers benefits of breastfeeding, food to avoid during confinement by quoting different practise by each race respectively. She demonstrated a true One Malaysian spirit by using terms and examples in different languages.  

The participants were enlightened by Ms Jasmine’s humourous sharing on breastfeeding tips. It was all giggles and chatter throughout the session. “Breast milk are precious gift of love and even adopted mothers could breast feed but please refrain one from being a walking pacifier,” shared Jasmine.

       

Besides sharing on breastfeeding benefits for both mummy and baby, she also shared on tips to overcome breastfeeding challenges, recipes for breastfeeding mothers as well as info on local breastfeeding support group.  The participants were seen busy taking down notes and clearing their queries from the expert.

The participants, mainly the first time parents, found the workshop informative and interesting, especially the tops on breastfeeding and what to expect during labour.

The antenatal tea party concluded on a positive note as participants went home with their hands full, with fond memory of an enjoyable Sunday afternoon as well as knowledge gained and new friend found.
