Is constipation common in pregnancy?

Yes, unfortunately constipation is common in pregnancy. Up to 30 – 40% of pregnant women   will encounter some form of constipation either mild or severe during pregnancy.

Why is constipation common during pregnancy?

There are several reasons why constipation is common in pregnancy:
  • During pregnancy the level of hormone progesterone increases causing slowing down of your gut.
  • Changes occur in the digestive tract where more fluid is reabsorped leaving the faeces harder.
  • As the uterus grows larger, it pushes down on the rectum also making you constipated.
  • Supplements such as Iron and Calcium could also make you constipated.

What could I do to prevent or treat constipation?

  • Drink a lot of water at least 6 – 8 glasses of clear water. This does not include your tea or coffee drinks.
  • Increase your intake of vegetable, fibres and fruits. You could also eat prune or drink prune juice.
  • Exercise at least 20 minutes 2 -3 times a week. This will get your gut moving as well.
  • Drink a lot of water with your iron supplements or speak to your doctor regarding whether you really need to take your iron supplements.
  • Try taking fibre supplements such as Metamucil which is safe in pregnancy.

What medication could I take to relieve my constipation?

Ask your doctor prior to taking any medication for constipation. Below are some medications that are given for constipation:
  • Stool softeners (to be taken daily): Colase (docusate)
  • Bulk producing laxative (could be taken daily): Metamucil, Citrucel
  • Stimulant laxatives (do not take this more than a week): Senokot, Dolcolox
Laxative pill and mineral oils are not recommended in pregnancy as they could cause stimulation of uterine contractions and dehydration with reduce nutrient absorption.
 

What complications could occur with constipation?

  • Abdominal pain
  • excessive straining
  • haemorrhoids.
